Is it kosher to leave prompts that are Avengers-related, but not specifically tied to the collective team/the team's adventures? E.g. character backstory prompts, prompts involving only a couple of characters, not the whole roster, etc?
imbecamiel on September 9th, 2012 03:36 am (UTC)
Absolutely! Prompts involving any of the individual main characters, or side characters, backstory, related to other movies in the Avengers movies 'verse (i.e. a Steve backstory prompt based on something that occurred in the Captain America movie, or a followup on an incident in one of the Iron Man movies, etc.)... it's all cool. We're trying to keep things as relaxed and friendly as possible, so we're definitely inclined toward being as inclusive of Avengers-related subject matter as we can, rather than frowning on things that may be more tangentially related. :)

(On that note, although the mods are pretty much just movie-verse fans at this point, we are open to the possibility of more comics-based prompts as well.)
Zhakaisha on September 9th, 2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
Now I just have to stop getting distracted by that shiny new Heart of the Swarm beta so I can write...

By the way, are there any rating limits on this comm? I realize gen doesn't usually lend to NC17, but I'm working on a Steve fic that may toe the line between PG13 and R depending on the level of detail. (That serum really sucks sometimes...)
imbecamiel on September 9th, 2012 02:11 pm (UTC)
Anything under NC-17 is fine, so long as you put warnings at the beginning so readers can make an informed choice. :)

Left a comment on the rec list (un-anon'd, even) and it got marked as spam. Dunno why. Just FYI. :)
Nefhirielnefhiriel on September 12th, 2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Pfft. That's LJ for ya. Unspammed. ^^

I just started an avenger fic meme here (http://avengers-fic.livejournal.com/a), for prompts that aren't gen but don't quite belong in the kink meme, and I was wondering about affiliations?

Re: Affiliation
Absolutely! I've added it to the list. Best of wishes with it. ;)

Also, your icon made me grin. :D

Re: Affiliation
Thanks! Yours is pretty great too:)

I get that the point of a gen comm is to not have romantic relationships be the focus of a story, but why are only canon pairings allowed to be hinted at/referred to? The rules of not focussing on romance, sex scenes, etc. is pretty evenly applied to all slash/het across the board, so I'm curious as to why only canon (usually het) pairings are allowed to be referred to.

I only read, but thought I'd ask. :)
Nefhiriel: Romola - Sunshinenefhiriel on September 21st, 2012 05:12 pm (UTC)
Thanks for asking! We're still working on expanding the rules list into something more comprehensive/thought-out than what's in the profile ATM, and input from readers and fillers alike helps a lot with that process.

That said...I have discussed this beforehand with my co-mod, and the main reason we've limited things to canon-only pairings (i.e. those canon-established relationships with a clear precedent) is that they can easily be referred to in a story without it becoming the focal point of a story, in part because there's no "setup" or emotional build, and in my experience they're less likely to totally dominate the emotional arc of a gen-focused story. (Essentially, the primary reason we said that background canon pairings were permitted was to clarify that it wasn't necessary to specify that, say, Tony and Pepper had broken up - or ignore her existence, send her on a business trip, whatever - in order for the story to be considered gen, as long as their romantic relationship is kept background.) The definitions of pre-slash/het vary depending on who you talk to, making it a tricky thing to allow on a gen comm. I've personally received fills for gen prompts that the author described as "mostly gen/pre-OT3", but which included a quite explicit groping/making out session as the central resolution to the plot.

Are there authors who are much more subtle, and would keep it within the spirit of the rules while hinting at a 'ship? Absolutely. But from what I've seen in other comms it tends to result in a lot of "gray area," pushing to see just how far it's possible to go, and the confusion of what constitues "pre." Considering that there are tons of comms out there to request slash and het, but not so many places focused around gen, it didn't seem like limiting things on that point would result in a too-exclusive atmosphere that'd leave people without a place to ask for or receive the stories they want. It's partly just a matter of categorization and advertising, you know? So that people looking for a specific type of story can go somewhere to find that type of story, instead of sorting through the big, mixed comms.

/long answer is long.

Does that make sense? We are open to discussion on these things, for sure, though I can't say that the rules'll be modified every time someone brings up a potential sticking point. :)

Makes sense, and I hadn't thought about it like that before. Thanks for clearing it up :)
Nefhiriel: Coffee - Team Coffeenefhiriel on September 21st, 2012 06:27 pm (UTC)
Welcome. ;) And it really helped me, actually, because, like I said, I've been needing to get some of these thoughts down on paper. I'm glad it clarified things!

I post a lot here. Oi.

I posted a fill to two prompts on Round 1 as well as linked to the Filled Prompts page, and all three comments have been marked as spam. >_> Do you mind unspamming them?

Also, could you possibly check the community settings to see what might possibly be setting LJ's spam filters off? I don't think I'm the first to external link to AO3 here, but I'm baffled as to what it might be.
Nefhiriel: Baking - Bake a Cakenefhiriel on September 22nd, 2012 01:58 pm (UTC)
Hey, that's what the thread's for. ;)

I don't believe there are any sensitivity options for the spam filter, but for now I've just turned the filter off. We're not on any spammer's To-Do List - yet, anyway. XD And I figure if we do start getting spam (unless it's a deluge) I'll just delete 'em ASAP.

Sorry about that!

ETA: Nothing should be screened now, but do let me know if it happens again. I image Ao3 links will be used aplenty, and I don't want that being blocked.

Hey, just wondering if this comm was going to be revived in wake of Captain America 2, which was absolutely awesome by the way, for gen prompts and whatnot. :D I hope so!
Nefhiriel: Romola - Hypernefhiriel on May 13th, 2014 11:07 pm (UTC)
It's great to have someone ask! I've been wondering if I could rekindle some interest in a gen prompt comm, so thank you. ;D

New round is up (and if you have any opportunities for word-of-mouth advertising, I'd definitely appreciate that, too).

Hope the new movie gets people prompting!

I co-mod [community profile] gensplosion on dreamwidth - a multi-fandom genfic rec community. Affiliates? It's cool if you're only after fellow LJ comms but I figured I'd ask - we gen ficcers should stick together... ;)

I actually just hooked up with mcugen, over on DW - so, yes, I'm absolutely cool with affiliating with sister comms over there!

It makes me SO happy to see gen havens cropping up and thriving (and I didn't know about your comm, so happy to discover it for personal enjoyment, too). :D

Hooray! ♥

Today, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone! dceagkfeeebefdfa

Re: John
Yikes - that's terrible! I hope your sister is going to pay for a new iPad for you? You really should've at least have gotten viral video out of it (although...I suppose that would've been rewarding your sister, too). XD

Director Loki of S.H.I.E.L.D.
I seriously have had this idea since I read a S.H.I.E.L.D agent Loki fic. Okay so Loki has been living on Earth for however long. He fought in World War 1 and 2. And anything else you can think of.

+Bonus if Jormungandr Nick Fury, Hel Darcy Lewis, Fernir Phil Coulson, are there. Also Nick can be in second command.
+Loki also didn't lead the invasion and has bee missing from Asgard for at least half a decade.
Go nuts anon.

I hope this is the right place for this?!

I'm a bit insecure how things work here. So I checked the Profile and the older Rounds for this. But I'm still not sure. :o/ [I feel soooo stupid, sorry.]

When requesting something: What do I have to write in the subject line?
How much detail should I write down? Is it also okay to only write 2 or 3 sentences?
Can we request a story that could happen in the future? ["Captain America 3" will be out in 2 years.]
imbecamiel on August 1st, 2014 05:49 pm (UTC)
Hey there! Yep, this is exactly what this section is for. ^^ Let's see if I can answer your questions for you.

For the first: We're not too particular about what needs to be in the subject line - basically, just something that gives a general idea of what the prompt's about. There's no specific format to what you need to say. (If you are filling a prompt, though, just remember to add "Fill" to the subject line.)

For the second question: Yep, just a couple sentences is fine! More details may be more likely to spark someone's imagination, but shorter or more vague prompts are fine as well here.

And for the third: Absolutely! Speculative/what-if stuff related to future movies (or things you'd like to see, even if you're pretty sure the movies themselves will go in a different direction) are just fine.

Basically, we're a pretty flexible group and we want to make things as fun and low-pressure for everyone as we can.

AOS prompts?
I know this is an Avengers prompt meme, but I happened to see a prompt for Agents of Shield in round 10, and I am absolutely dying for AOS prompts. Are they okay to post and fill here, or is there another meme for that?
imbecamiel on January 18th, 2015 11:16 pm (UTC)
Re: AOS prompts?
We haven't discussed this specifically, but... we're pretty loose on what qualifies, here, wherever possible. I'd say you're good to go ahead on AoS prompts. ^^

Rec: An Invincible Winter
Just found this on the AO3 with a recent update. Looks like a potentially really neat AU that I'd love to see keep going and I think it deserves a little more attention. (I am posting this rec without author permission)

Title: An Invincible Winter

The description:

On January 18th 2015, Project Insight is launched by HYDRA. Hundreds of thousands of missiles explode all over the world, setting in motion a nuclear winter, widespread displacement, and turmoil.
One missile destroys a scientific base in the arctic, and the resulting inferno thaws Captain America. Steve Rogers awakes to a world once again at war, and tries to be a hero.
Another missile inadvertently wipes out half a HYDRA base in Ohio, and with the aid of a dying scientist, the Winter Soldier escapes, and tries to be a person.
This is the story of how the two, finally, come together.
